Today, WLSN made community contributions totaling $75.00 to the following foundations and organizations:

  • Guide Dog Foundation for the Blind

  • Prevent Cancer Foundation

  • American Cancer Society

Guide Dog Foundation

The Guide Dog Foundation was founded in 1946 with a simple mission; provide guide dogs and training, free of charge, to those who are blind or visually impaired. It costs over $50,000 to breed, raise, train, and place just one assistance dog. Funding from generous individuals, corporations, foundations, and community organizations are what allow the Guide Dog Foundation to provide their service free of charge.

WLSN, under its community motto, "every little bit counts" has made a contribution of $25.00 to the Guide Dog Foundation. That $25.00 will provide food and supplies for one puppy in training.

How can you help the Guide Dog Foundation? Donate!

$10 will provide a bed for the nursery.

$25 will provide food and supplies for a puppy in training.

$50 will feed one dog for two months.

$100 will provide vaccinations.

$200 will provide specialized training equipment.

$500 will help with student travel expenses.

Prevent Cancer Foundation

The only U.S. non-profit organization solely dedicated to cancer prevention and early detection. The Prevent Cancer Foundation mission centers around saving lives across all populations through cancer prevention and early detection. The goal of the Prevent Cancer Foundation is to stop cancer before it starts.

Nearly 1,736,000 Americans will be diagnosed with cancer this year and more than 606,800 will die. Research shows that up to 50% of cancer cares and about 50% of cancer deaths are preventable with the knowledge we have today. Prevention and early detection are more important than ever, and are proven, effective strategies to lower health care costs.

Every day, we make choices that affect our health. Below are seven steps the Prevent Cancer

Foundation recommends to reduce your risk.

  1. Don't use tobacco.

  2. Protect your skin from the sun.

  3. Eat a healthy diet.

  4. Maintain a healthy weight and be physically active.

  5. Practice safe sex and avoid risky behaviors.

  6. Get immunized (HPV & Hepatitis vaccines).

  7. Know your family medical history and get regular cancer screenings.

Diet and Physical activity play an important role in the fight to stave off cancer.

  • Being overweight or obese may increase the risk of cancer.

  • Not having a healthy eating pattern may increase the risk of cancer.

  • Consuming alcohol can increase the risk of cancer.

Getting regular physical activity helps decrease the risk of cancer. It's important to get to and stay at a healthy weight during your life. Learning about your body mass index (BMI) and knowing where you should fall is important in both staying healthy and learning to keep your body weight within the healthy range.

The ACS says, "Move more, sit less!"

Get at least 150 minutes of moderate or 75 minutes of vigorous activity each week. More=better. 300 minutes of moderate activity is best and you can opt to combine moderate and vigorous activities as well. To find out more on prevention, early detection, and staying healthy, please click here.
